Cleaning and scratch repair do different jobs
Cleaning lifts material off the surface. Repairing a scratch may involve working on the glass itself. Pilkington’s window-care guidance says abrasion and re-polishing should be left to experts, and warns that removing glass from the surface can produce optical distortion—a change in how the view looks through that area.
That is why “polish it out” is not simply a stronger window wash. A glass specialist needs to assess whether a repair is suitable or replacement should be considered. Do not assume a cleaning appointment includes either.
If a line or patch remains after cleaning
First, identify the exact pane and look at it in daylight from a safe position. Vitro Architectural Glass explains that lighting and the background affect how visible light scratches are. Noticing a mark in a different light does not, by itself, establish when or how it happened.
- Record the location: for example, “front display pane, lower right,” rather than “the shop windows.”
- Photograph the mark and the whole pane: note the date and whether you can tell which side it is on. If not, say so.
- Gather product details: the window or glass manufacturer, known coating or film, and any installation paperwork.
- Describe what changed: whether the mark was seen before cleaning, remains after drying, or was noticed after nearby work. Keep observations separate from assumptions about the cause.
If the concern is spots rather than a line, our guide to marks left after window cleaning covers that separate question.
Harder scrubbing can add damage
Vitro warns that gritty particles caught in cleaning tools can scratch glass and that razor blades or metal scrapers should not be part of routine cleaning. It also advises against abrasive cleaners. Do not use a scouring pad or blade to test whether a stubborn mark will come off. Pause and check the care instructions for the actual glass, coating, or film.
Who should look at it?
For a mark noticed around a cleaning visit, share the photos with the cleaner so the condition can be reviewed. For suspected glass damage, contact the window supplier, installer, or a qualified glass specialist about assessment and options. A shop tenant can involve the property manager to locate the glass records and coordinate that next step.
When requesting exterior window cleaning or interior window cleaning from Valley, flag existing marks beforehand. The cleaning request can then distinguish dirt removal from a separate repair concern.
