Start with a yearly review, then look at the surface

Concrete Alberta’s driveway maintenance bulletin recommends cleaning dirt and stains at least yearly. That is a general maintenance reference from a different climate, not a Florida service schedule.

For a Lakeland driveway, a useful reminder is to look again after the wetter part of the year. Compare the open parking area with the edges under trees and beside irrigation. If the surface has only loose leaves or sand, clear those first and reassess. If an attached layer of grime remains across the concrete, a deeper clean is worth planning.

What needs attention before the annual reminder?

  • Leaves and grass clippings: sweep them away as they collect. They do not need to wait for a whole-driveway appointment.
  • A fresh oil drip: address the spill promptly with a product appropriate for the concrete and its finish, following its label. Also fix the source of the leak; repeated washing will not stop a car dripping in the same spot.
  • A growing film or slippery patch: arrange attention sooner and keep people away from the slippery area. Do not wait for a calendar date or test it by walking across it.
  • One persistent mark: distinguish that stain from general dirt. Cleaning the entire driveway repeatedly may not solve a localized problem.

The Concrete Society explains that concrete absorbs stains and that complete removal is not always possible. A remaining mark does not automatically mean the driveway needs another wash.

Does every cleaning need a pressure washer?

No. Sweeping removes loose material; more firmly attached dirt may need a different approach. In its concrete patio care guidance, QUIKRETE distinguishes light dirt from stubborn staining and starts with removing loose sediment. The useful principle for a driveway is to match the cleaning to what is actually there.

Check the installer’s or coating manufacturer’s care instructions before treating sealed, painted, resurfaced, or decorative concrete. Crumbling areas, flaking finishes, and exposed aggregate where the surface has worn away need assessment rather than simply a stronger clean. See our guide to cleaning methods for why the surface matters.

Find your driveway’s pattern

After cleaning, save a photo of the dry driveway and the date. Check the same places a few months later: the parking spots, shaded edge, and walking route to the front door. If one strip needs attention while the rest stays clean, focus on that strip and what keeps depositing material there.

Use that pattern to bring the next cleaning forward or keep your yearly review. Valley’s pressure-washing service page explains the surfaces and condition details to share when a deeper clean is needed.
