Identify the film—and which side it is on
Start with the installer’s invoice, warranty paperwork, or product care sheet. Look for the brand and product name, installation date, and whether it was fitted inside or outside.
LLumar’s architectural-film FAQ says film is usually installed inside, but exterior products also exist. It also describes films that are almost clear. Appearance alone is therefore a poor way to decide whether a surface has film or how to clean it.
For a leased storefront, the property manager or previous installer may have the records. If you cannot identify the product, tell the cleaner what is unknown instead of assuming the window is bare glass.
New film may need time before its first wash
Do not book cleaning immediately after a film installation without checking the installer’s handover instructions. For example, 3M’s January 2025 safety and security film bulletin instructs customers not to wash the treated windows for 30 days so adhesion can build.
That example is not a universal timetable for every brand or film. LLumar says curing time varies with weather, glass, and product type. Ask the installer for the cleaning-ready date for your installation, and pass that date to whoever maintains the windows.
For a shop with an existing cleaning schedule, mark the affected panes in the staff handover so a routine visit does not overlook the waiting period.
The exact product changes the care instructions
3M’s window-film care bulletin rules out knives, scrapers, brushes, abrasive materials, and heavy pressure. It also gives a specific warning against damp microfiber cloths on Thinsulate Climate Control Window Film. That exception is a useful reminder: even a familiar soft cleaning tool is not automatically right for every film.
LLumar’s FAQ permits non-abrasive cleaning materials for its films while warning against hard, sharp metal objects. Use the instructions for the installed product rather than combining tips intended for different films.
If you see lifting edges, tears, or persistent bubbles, photograph them and ask the installer to assess them before cleaning that area. Do not scrape an edge or try to press a bubble out as part of cleaning. For a mark that might be surface damage, see what window cleaning can and cannot do about scratches.
Send these details before booking
- The film brand and product, plus a copy of its care instructions.
- The installation date and any instruction to delay cleaning.
- Which panes and sides have film, including doors or interior partitions.
- Photos of any existing edge damage or marks, and which signs or decals must stay.
Include those details when discussing interior window cleaning or exterior window cleaning with Valley. The team can then assess the requested work with the product requirements in view. Cleaning is separate from film installation, removal, or repair.
